Libby Creek Gold Panning Area is located in Kootenai National Forest. The parking area at the panning area is a small clearing adjacent to Libby Creek. No restrooms or camping facilities are available. Pets are welcome, but they must be kept on leashes.

Libby Dam

Libby Dam is the culmination of years of effort on the part of both the United States and Canada to develop a flood control plan for the Columbia River basin.

The Libby Ranger Station is located 13 miles north of Libby on Highway 37, approximately 4 miles southwest of Libby Dam.

Little Cherry Creek offers approximately 1.5 miles of fishable stream, averaging 7 feet wide and 8 inches deep. Cutthroat trout is the main fish species (5 to 8 inches).

Just beyond Spar Creek the cliffs and pinnacles of Spar Peak are visible from Little Spar Lake Trail (143), which remains on a sidehill most of the way. It follows the creek up a steep narrow valley with avalanche chutes and steep rock walls where mountain goats may occasionally be viewed.

This lake may be accessed from a campground at the south end and by turn-outs along the Loon Lake Road. It is a long narrow lake, a total of 26 acres. It is deep in the middle and has shallow dropoffs.

Loon Lake Campground is located on the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana at an elevation of 3,600 feet. It is a small campground approximately 20 miles south of the town of Yaak, and 18 miles northwest of Libby. There are 4 campsites with restrooms.

McGillivray Campground

McGillivray Recreation Site is located on the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana at an elevation of 2500 feet. The site is just 7 miles above Libby Dam and adjacent to Lake Koocanusa. This is the spot to get away from it all; something for everyone.

These streams provide good brook trout fishing. The stream averages 8 feet wide and 6 inches deep, with good pools. Silver Butte/ Fisher River, East Fisher River, and he smaller tributaries provide excellent back country fishing.

McGinnis Meadows Cattle & Guest Ranch

McGinnis Meadows Cattle & Guest Ranch is an authentic working cattle ranch located in northwest Montana. Our main emphasis .is our horse and cattle program. We ride and teach our horses using the Buck Brannaman style of horsemanship.

The fishable portion of Meadow Creek is almost entirely on private land. Permission from the landowner should be obtained prior to use. Fishing is fair for rainbow, cutthroat, and pan-sized brook trout.

Miller Ridge Trail (506) offers a ridge top hiking or stock use experience. Starting on a fairly steep south slope, the trail switch-backs up to a more gentle ridge top mid-section, followed by a short climb to the Libby Divide trail.

Northwest Peak Trail

The lower half of Northwest Peak Trail (169) is the easiest climb, with an average grade of 10 percent; the climb to the top of Northwest Peak has grades from 10 to 35 percent. Drinking water is not available enroute. The trail is closed to motorized travel from April 1 to November 30.
