Alta Campground is located in Bitterroot National Forest of southwest Montana. Near historical town of Alta, the first Ranger Station in the United States. Hughes Creek was the site of early placer gold mining. At an elevation of 4,500 feet, the campground encompasses 6 acres.

Alta Ranch

The Alta Ranch is tucked away in the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains 90 miles south of Missoula and 30 miles southwest of Darby. With just 3 vacation homes (authentic log cabins) on 140 acres, the Alta Ranch offers plenty of privacy and room to roam.

Baker Lake Trail (234) is relatively steep, but it is an easy and quick access to Baker Lake. Its primary use is by day hikers and hunters and it is not recommended for stock use. This trail is not well defined, but the lake can be reached with adequate map reading.

Bear Creek Pass Campground is located in Bitterroot National Forest at an elevation of 6500 feet. The campground is has 7 campsites and restrooms. Water is not provided. There is a trailer limit of 32 feet.

The Bitterroot Beanery is drive by espresso hut located along Highway 93. We are conveniently located in the parking lot of Peoples Market for fast in and out service.

Camas Creek Trail (125) is maintained yearly.

Canyon Creek Nature Trail (101) is maintained every three years. This trail provides good hiking trail for young and old alike.

Centennial Grove Trail (514) is maintained as needed. Trail classified as easy. This is an accessible paved and sawdust trail. There is access to Skalkaho Creek. For day use only.

Chief Joseph Ranch

John Muir writes, 'Come to the woods, for here is rest.' Chief Joseph Ranch invites you to rest amidst the beauty of Montana's Bitterroot Valley. Spend your days walking along Fern Creek, fishing on the Bitterroot River, or horseback riding through the forest.

Circle KBL Outfitters offers family camping, day rides and wilderness trips. Horseback pack in big game hunting for elk, mule deer, and black bear as well as guided hunts and spike camps for archery or rifle seasons.

The Alta Ranger Station was built between 1937 and 1939 and was the first official ranger station in Darby. Between 1965 and 1990 this building was used by the Bitterroot Hot Shot Fire Crew. In 1991 it was converted into the Historical Visitors Center.

Sunday worship at 11:00am and 6:00pm. Sunday school at 10:00am. Wednesday at 7:00pm.

Darby's Pioneer Memorial Museum was originally one of the first hand-hewn homestead cabins built in the area. It was crafted by early settler Evelin Matteson in 1886 on his homestead near the mouth of tin cup creek.

This District office administers to the part of the Bitterroot National Forest from Darby to Hamilton. Firewood permits, Christmas tree permits (in season), and maps are available for sale at this office when the Historical Visitors Center is not open.

Dotson's Saloon has been around for nearly 80 years. The new addtion, Fat Mac's Pizzeria, is the only place where you can enjoy 'real' pizza while being surrounded by a log cabin style rustic atmosphere.

Flying R Guest Cabins

Flying R Guest Cabins - located in Montana's Bitterroot Valley - on your way to and from Yellowstone and Glacier Parks.

Cabin can accomodate up to 4 people; cost $25.00. Maximum stay: 7 days. Available by reservation only. Cabin was built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps for use as a fireman's cabin. The interior and exterior of the cabin have not been modified by any remodeling or additions.

Joe Biner's Rainbow Guide Service offers catch and release fly fishing. We are a member of Floating Outfitters Association of Montana and provide services for the physically challenged.
