Kootenai Falls

Kootenai Falls is the largest undammed falls in the state and a major attraction to those traveling through the area. It offers an unforgettable and breathtaking view as the Kootenai River loses 300 feet in elevation traveling a few hundred yards down river.

Kootenai Falls Swinging Bridge

Built by the Forest Service to access forest fires across the Kootenai River, this foot bridge was destroyed by a major flood in 1948. The bridge was rebuilt on concrete piers and is now protected from flooding by Libby Dam.

This road system provides a breathtaking view of the Kootenai River and Bull Lake Valley. Turn on Road 331 and continue on Road 4445 for vistas of the Kootenai River, Cabinet Mountains, Savage Lake, and the Bull Lake Valley.

Kootenai National Forest

The Kootenai National Forest is located in the extreme northwest corner of Montana, bordered on the north by Canada and the west by Idaho. Ranges of high, craggy peaks mark the Forest with 8,738 feet. Snowshoe peak in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness reaching the highest point.

The Kootenai River is a beautiful, large mountain river and an outstanding site for viewing bald eagles, nesting osprey, great blue herons, and waterfowl.

Kootenai Rivcer Guest House provides fly fishing specialist on Kootenai River with two river front log guest houses on the Kootenai. The houses are completely furnished with a full sized kitchen and utensils.

Kootenai River Scenic Drive-USFS

This river is regulated by Libby Dam, which supplies water from 90-mile-long Lake Koocanusa. Besides offering a prime trout fishery, the river area affords viewing opportunities for eagles, osprey, deer, and mountain sheep.

Nestled among peaks and valleys, quiet waters and byways, Kootenai Country is something of an undiscovered great escape. Experience the area's many natural wonders while you hike, bike, ski, ride horseback, drive, snowmobile or boat.

Lake Creek is inhabited by rainbow and cutthroat trout, up to 10 inches in length. Resident suitability is good to very good . Foot travel along the stream may be difficult as stream bank cover is generally dense and brushy.

Lake Creek Campground is located on the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana at an elevation of 3,300 feet. This is a small campground with 4 campsites and access to several hiking trails.

This 90-mile-long lake provides excellent fishing and boating opportunities. Species of fish include rainbow and cutthroat trout, whitefish, kokanee, and burbot (Ling cod), and streams draining into the lake offer good fishing for brook trout.

Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway, in the Kootenai National Forest in northwestern Montana, was created in 1992 to become the Northern Region's 5th scenic byway. It follows the Kootenai River and Lake Koocanusa via State Highway No. 37.

Leigh Lake Trail

Leigh Lake Trail (132) is a short, steep trail that is heavily used as an access point into the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Mountain goats are often seen on the slopes above the lake. No camping is allowed at Leigh Lake.

Most of the lower reaches of Libby Creek lie along private land and have been extensively altered through mining operations. Some of the upper reaches of the stream have quality pools and the stream banks are very bushy in areas. Rainbow trout 5 to 14 inches may be caught t in Libby Creek.
