The Ashland Ranger District is located in south-central Montana. It is the largest contiguous block of Federal ownership in eastern Montana. This District has the largest grazing program of any National Forest Ranger District in the Nation. The area is rich in coal and wildlife.
This largest of the national forests in Montana covers 3.32 million acres, and lies in eight Southwest Montana counties (Granite, Powell, Jefferson, Deer Lodge, Silver Bow, Madison, Gallatin and Beaverhead).
Located north of Neihart, Montana about 4 miles along US Highway 89 between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. General forest information and maps are available. Office hours 8:00am to 4:30pm - Generally open on weekends in the summer.
The Cabinet Ranger District encompasses a major portion of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Numerous roads and hiking trails lead to high peaks and spectacular views of the surrounding area.
The lands of the Custer National Forest and National Grasslands lie within 20 counties of Montana, North Dakotas and South Dakota. They are scattered from the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park to the southeastern corner of North Dakota.
This District office administers to the part of the Bitterroot National Forest from Darby to Hamilton. Firewood permits, Christmas tree permits (in season), and maps are available for sale at this office when the Historical Visitors Center is not open.
The 2,346,000 acre Flathead National Forest is bordered by Canada to the north, Glacier National Park to the north and east, the Lolo National Forest to the south, the Kootenai National Forest to the west and the Lewis and Clark National Forest to the east.
This Ranger Station is located just 22 miles south of the US/Canada border at an elevation of 3,000 feet. It is encompassed within the Tobacco Valley, along with the small communities of Eureka, Fortine, Murphy Lake, and Trego.
The Gallatin National Forest encompasses 2,149,629 acres in south central Montana. The Forest is adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. This Forest contains portions of the Lee Metcalf and Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Areas.
The District Office sells a variety of forest service maps. Firewood, burning and Christmas tree permits are available seasonally. For remote cabins are available to rent to the public.
Helena National Forest is located in west central Montana and surrounds the capital city of Helena. The forest contains 976,000 acres and is one of 10 national forests in the state.
The Helena Ranger Station is one of 3 district offices on the Helena National Forest. Hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm weekdays. Visitor maps and general forest information is available, as well as permits for firewood and Christmas trees.
