Citadel Rock State Monument is located in north central Montana along the Missouri River. The site is accessible by boat only, fishing may be enjoyed by the angler. There are no facilities available at this day use area.
Fort Assinniboine Historic Site was constructed in 1879, and became the largest military fort west of the Mississippi River. The post had 104 buildings and was contained within a 40 mile long by 15 mile wide military reservation. Several of the original buildings still stand.
Established in 1864, Fort Benton is known as the 'Birthplace of Montana'. An American Fur Company trading post at first, it became the hub for trade and travel throughout the northwestern United States and Canada.
On July 26, 1806, Capt. Meriwether Lewis with George Drewyer (Drouillard), Joseph Fields and Reuben Fields camped with a party of eight Blackfeet Indians.
The Missoula County Courthouse was built in 1908 and occupies an entire city block. The courthouse contains 8 murals by E.S. Paxson. Edgar Samuel Paxson is probably best known for his painting of 'Custer's Last Stand' finished in 1899.
On a gentle slope surrounded by 10 acres of spacious lawns and other state buildings, Montana's Capitol looks north over the beautiful Prickly Pear Valley. The building is constructed of sandstone and granite. A statue depicting Liberty sits atop the copper dome.
