On August 17, 1959 an earthquake in the Madison Canyon River Area, near West Yellowstone, formed Quake Lake. The earthquake created a massive landslide of about 80 million tons of rock, which stopped the flow of the Madison River in the Madison River Canyon gorge.
Rock Lake is located in a natural forest environment. There is designated parking; individuals walk a very short distance to the picnic tables and tent sites. An undeveloped boat launch and lakeside sites are available. Maximum length of stay is 14 days, trailer length is 20 feet.
Savage Lake is a state fishing access site located in northwest Montana. Fishing and boating may be enjoyed on the lake. This is a day use area only. A relatively warm lake nestled beneath the Cabinet Mountains, it provides a comfortable experience for boating and fishing.
Seeley Lake is a 1,025-acre glacially-formed lake. It is stocked several times each year with rainbow trout, some weighing up to 15 pounds. The lake is also very popular among bass fishermen and boasts one of the finest bass fisheries in western Montana.
Skyles Lake is a state fishing access site located in northwest Montana. No camping is permitted and no facilities are available. Day use only. Poor access to site.
Smith Lake Fishing Access Site is a day use only site. The site offers a boat launch, toilets and access to camp trailers. It is open all season. Existing ADA Level: Easy Accessibility.
Spar Lake offers excellent boating possibilities. It is large enough for power boats, yet also ideal for row boats and canoes. If you are planning a weekend boating trip it is advisable to arrive early as space is limited. This is a popular lake with high use by local residents.
St. Mary Lake is on the east side of Glacier National Park along The Going-to-the-Sun Road. This lake is 10 miles long but not as wide as McDonald Lake. You'll want to stop at the turnouts at the end of the lake for a view of 100-foot Virginia Falls across the valley.
Swan Lake is located in the Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana. It is about 20 miles long and a mile wide at the north end of the Swan Valley. The lake is a popular fishing and resort area.
Numerous lake sites in the 20 mile length of lakes. Camping permitted; primitive sites. Boat launch, toilets, and access for camp trailers are available. 14 day stay limit. Surrounded by a forest of douglas fir and ponderosa pine, there is a park on the north shore of Middle Thompson Lake.
Just east of Shelby (less than an hour away), residents and visitors can enjoy one of the most versatile recreational areas in Montana, Tiber Dam-Lake Elwell. The lake provides excellent year-round angling for Walleye, Northern and Sauger Pike, native trout, Ling, Perch and others.
Tiber Reservoir State Recreation Area is located in north central Montana. At an elevation of 3500 feet, the recreation area encompasses 6917 acres. There are numerous tent and trailer campsites. There is a large developed campground available.
Tizer Lakes is a state fishing access site located in southwest Montana. The lakes are accessible by pack trail, 8 miles from the trailhead. Tent camping is permitted with a 7 day limit, sites are primitive and no drinking water is available.
A marshy lake in dense timber, approximately 7 acres in size and 15 feet deep in the middle. Stocked with cutthroat trout. Swampy around the edges and waders are helpful. Ice fishing is fair in the winter months. Moose are often sighted around the lake.
Upsata Lake is a state fishing access site located in west central Montana. Camping is permitted with limited facilities. No drinking water is availalbe. Fishing and boating may be enjoyed complete with a boat launch facility. Time limit of 7 days.
Yellowstone Lake is the largest lake in North America at this high an elevation, 7,733 feet. It is 20 miles long and 14 miles across from West Thumb to the opposite shore. It covers 139 square miles and has a shoreline of 110 miles.
