Blackfeet Indian Reservation

Historically the largest and most dominant Indian tribe in Montana was the Blackfeet. The origin of their name was probably derived from the blackened moccasins tribe traditionally wore. The dark hue may have been painted purposely or may have been darkened by prairie fires.

Headquarters of the Crow Indian Reservation (638-2601) and close to the Bighorn Canyon Recreation Area and Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. Crow Agency becomes the 'tepee capital of the world' in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration.

The Flathead Indian Reservation is home to three tribes, the Bitterroot Salish, Upper Pend d'Oreille, and the Kootenai. 'Confederated Salish' refers to both the Salish and Pend d'Oreille tribes. Unlike the other tribes in Montana, the Salish migrated from the west.

Fort Belknap Indian Reservation

Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, located between the Milk River and Little Rocky Mountains, is home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. Guided tours are available to Snake Butte, Mission Canyon, Bear Gulch and St. Paul's Mission.

Fort Peck Indian Reservation

About 6, 000 Sioux and Assinniboine live on the reservation, encompassing more than 2 million acres of land just east of Fort Peck Lake, almost to North Dakota, and from 50 miles south of Canada to the Missouri River in the south.

Little Shell Tribal Council is headquartered in Great Falls, Montana. This band of the Chippewa Tribe is a state-recognized tribe without a designated reservation in Montana. There are over 4,000 enrolled members within the state, many of which live in the Great Falls and surrounding area.

Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation

Ashland and Lame Deer 477-8844: Located on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation (477-6284), these two small towns are big in cultural appeal.

Rocky Boy Indian Reservation

The Chippewa and Cree Indians maintain a strong heritage through the annual Pow-Wow, featuring authentic Native American dancers and competitions, and other attractions.
