Bear Paw Battlefield

One of three sites of the Nez Perce National Historic Park in Montana, the Bear Paw Battlefield is located 16 miles south of Chinook on Highway 240. At this site, Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce surrendered on October 5, 1877 after a 1,300 mile retreat.

The Friends of Canyon Creek are currently working on a walk through display at the monument location to tell the history of the Canyon Creek Battle between the Nez Perce led by Chief Joseph and the US Calvary led by Col. Samuel Sturgis. This battle took place on September 13,1877.
