The artwork of Doug Turman defies simple explanation. Once you've seen one of his new oils on panel, the series entitled 'Streets of Verona', inspired by a recent trip to Italy, you'll be convinced that each one has a story to tell but Turman insists that it's the viewer who is the story teller not himself. 'There is no key to how to view these paintings. I want them to be complicated, beautifully compelling visual experiences. I don't go out of my way to please people with my work.'

How many of us have taken a trip and later tried to recount it to someone who wasn't there' Words are limited and photographs just can't capture the memory. As a painter, Doug Turman is in a unique position to represent a visual memory, malleable, changeable and prone to interpretation, yet immediate, unexpected and a delight to behold.
